Description

The western lakes and coastline of Cumbria are the Lake District's hidden gems a rugged, romantic and largely unspoilt setting for Hodgson House, one of a select number of properties in the 30 acre grounds of Irton Hall, which has its own historic connections to Henry VI and Oliver Cromwell. Wastwater Lake and Miterdale are nearby, whilst a trip up Eskdale should take the brave over two high fell passes, Hardknott and Wrynose, down into Little Langdale and the heart of the Lakes. The coastline is high and wild, though St Bees offers more gentle access to its sandy beach, and there is plenty of fell walking. Whitehaven's maritime history and museums, Muncaster Castle's owl centre and the Ravenglass steam trains make a good day out. Steamers on Windermere under an hour's drive. Pub 1 mile, shop 3 miles.

Reviews

We had a wonderful holiday and the accommodation offered a fantastic location. Miss G, WOKING, Surrey 30 August 2009
The location and setting of this cottage is fantastic, and there are many activties to keep you busy in the local area such as Ravenglass Railway, walks around the beautiful Wast Water, Muncaster Castle and the Beach at St Bee's. The Lakes busier 'touristy' places are approx 1 hour away, although we felt that we had more than enough to do in the surrounding area. Hodgson House itself is a lovely cottage which is extremely well equipped along with an array of games to keep the children entertained on wet days!!
Mrs S, Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire 17 August 2009

It’s the magnificent scenery that attracts so many holidaymakers to the Lake District and Go2's wide range of holiday cottages and lets in Cumbria and the Lakes are perfectly located to make the most of what is arguably the most beautiful region in England.
The Lake District National Park features stunning scenery of high fells and majestic lakes. This is ideal walking country, particularly over the many hills. The Lake District has the highest hills in England, including Scafell Pike, the country’s highest point. And of course there are the lakes themselves: glorious Windermere, pretty Derwent Water and beautiful Ullswater are just some of the highlights of a holiday in this area.
For the historically minded, Cumbria offers a wealth of Celtic monuments, Roman remains, stately homes and ruined abbeys. Carlisle still has some of its ancient walls standing, as well as a Norman castle, and the western part of Hadrian’s Wall is nearby. Other places of interest include Penrith, with its castle and remarkably unchanged market square; Keswick, which was once the centre of pencil manufacturing; the busy market town of Kendal and Cockermouth, Wordsworth’s birthplace.
